You have probably heard that there are different kinds of drill bits, so what is a step drill bit? It is simply a special bit with different diameters from its base to its tip.
The bits are designed that way to facilitate the creation of different diameter holes. Simply put, they are used to enlarge holes. Now, most of these bits are explicitly made for different applications and that makes them costly.
Put on Protection
It is important to keep in mind that even the simplest drilling tasks can have debris flying in your face. As such, you want to wear some form of protection such as safety goggles for your eyes, mask for your face, and gloves for your hands.
You also want to ensure that the electrical outlet you use is secure. Trust us; you do not want loose or hanging wiring especially when using power tools. It can easily and rapidly turn into a fatality.
Consider your Worksheet
We have already mentioned that step drill bits are mostly used on metal or wood. Note that you will need different bits for different materials.
The drill bit you use for wood is not the same one that will work on stainless steel. You, therefore, want to read the product label to confirm if it is created for the application you intend to work on.

Place the Bit on the Intended Area
After protecting yourself and determining the material you will be working on, you then want to position your drill bit on the spot you want to create the hole.
Once you do that, use a hammer to hit the blunt end of the center punch. Doing that provides a clear spot for the bit to be put so that it doesn’t sway once you begin drilling.
Remember that precision is crucial when it comes to drilling. If you do not get the exact position and hole size, then there is no point in using the drill bit.
Secure the Bit and Run it
Next, you want to go ahead and secure your step drill bit into the drill motor chuck. Remember to apply a generous amount of cutting fluid to the center.
Ensure that your drill bit is properly aligned with the center mark and then proceed to press the drill trigger down. Run the small drill bit through your worksheet.
After that replace the small bit with a bigger one and align it with the hole you have already created. Press the trigger to create further depression and a larger hole.
Take Regular Breaks
If you have drilled before, you know that you are constantly tempted to put constant pressure on the bit. Don’t do it. Instead, take regular breaks as you drill as this will not only prevent your motor from overworking but keep it from overheating as well.
As soon as you get the desired diameter for your hole, you want to stop right away otherwise you will create one that is bigger than what you need.
Removal and Cleaning
Your work is now done at this point so it would be wise to remove your large step drill bit from your drill’s motor.
After that, you want to clean the bits and the drill motor to remove any metal or wood shavings. You want to clean the hole you created as well.
If you were using a step drill bit for metal, it is important to polish it well before putting it away. Use a drill bit storage case if you have one as it will certainly keep them together and organized for when you will need them again.
Get this, step drill bits are used to create holes up to ¼ inch thick on metal. The bits are designed to create larger holes. Each step drill bit is larger in diameter than the one before it. We think that it is important to note that the smaller step drill bits self-start so you will not need a pilot bit to start your holes. If you want to start with a bigger hole, you may need to have it pre-drilled to a diameter that equals the smallest step on your bit.
