Comparisons of the Top Corded Hammer Drill for Concrete
Maybe you just do not have the time to go through this review or you simply do not want to. Don’t stress we have you covered.
The following table analyzes our top choices so scan through it to see which hammer drill could be a good fit for you.
Buying Guide for Perfect Corded Hammer Drill for Concrete
Picking a good hammer drill is not about settling for the first unit that you come across. You want to consider several factors before parting with your money.
Some of these factors include:
Intended Use
Before paying for a hammer drill, you want to ask yourself what you intend to do with it to determine whether it is the correct tool for the job. This will make the selection process easier.
For instance, you cannot use a drill designed for plastic and other softer materials to bore holes through concrete.
That said; some models come with different modes of operation hence offering you versatility. We would recommend going for one like this.
Chuck Type
Most modern hammer drills come with keyless chucks and understandably so because these allow for easier and faster changing of bits.
However, there are still key chuck models that perform quite well. The only difference is that you will have to tighten the chuck manually.
On the flip side, you will get enhanced retention and will therefore not have to worry about the chuck sliding out of place.
Drill Bits
Other than picking a hammer drill that will deliver sterling performance, you want one that comes with several accessories as well.
For example, a good hammer drill should come with several drill bits ideally in several sizes and styles. This will come in handy when it comes to handling different projects.
Still, on the bits, it would be preferable if some of them have carbide tips, as they will last longer.
Drill Speed
Speed has a lot to do with how your drill performs. Nevertheless, you are encouraged to go for a drill that comes with adjustable speeds.
This allows you to slow down or speed up your drill and ultimately gives you better control. Other than that, you will be able to drill with better precision and avoid unnecessary mistakes.
Since we are talking about hammer drills for concrete, you want to get one with more blows per minute as well as rotations per minute. This will make it easier to handle such heavy-duty jobs.
Safety Mechanism
Safety is paramount and the hammer drill you pick should be designed with that in mind. The most typical safety feature for a hammer drill is its two handles that offer stability.
It is also important for the drill’s handle to be ergonomic as it provides you with comfortable handling. This is particularly important for corded drills because they come with a lot of power.
Motor Power
Different drills have different size motors and you want to keep in mind that bigger motors deliver better performance.
While most drills come with enough power to handle general tasks, you want to go for one that is specifically designed to handle heavy-duty tasks such as concrete drilling.
Now, drill power is measured in amperes and the general range is 5-10 amperes. For concrete drilling, you will be better off with greater drilling power.
Brand and Quality
We already mentioned that there is an assortment of options when it comes to hammer drills. In that regard, having several brands in mind could help narrow down your choices.
Usually, the big names in the industry produce quality products so you may want to consider picking your drill based on that.
However, you should keep in mind that this is not always the case. Check product reviews to see what others are saying about the drill you are planning to buy. This should give you a better understanding.

How to Use a Drill for Concrete
Now that you know some of the options available to you when it comes to hammer drills for concrete, it is only right for us to give you the steps for using the tool once you purchase it.
Step 1
On the surface, you want to drill through, mark where you want the holes created using a pencil. You also want to double-check to ensure that the markings are in the correct position before proceeding.
At this stage, you should also consider the drilling depth required for each hole. If your drill comes with a stop bar, follow user instructions to set it to the depth you want. If it does not, bind some masking tape around the drill bit to signify where you should stop.
Step 2
Put on your safety goggles to protect your eyes because you can never tell what will happen as you are drilling. You then want to insert your chosen drill bit into the drill. Then, get into the drilling position by putting your shoulder-width apart and planting your feet firmly on the ground.
With both hands, hold your drill securely. You do this by holding it in one hand and if it does not come with an extra handle for your other hand, use the hand to brace the rear of the drill.
It is important to have control over your tool so that it does not falter once you begin to drill. As you lean in to drill, the bit should be perpendicular to your surface. That said; you should be ready for a bit of withdrawal from the drill’s action.
Step 3
Bore a guide hole first. Most hammer drills feature just two speeds and because of that, you want to turn your drill to the lower speed as you create the guide hole.
In case your drill comes with a single speed, work on brief, regulated bursts lasting seconds until you get your hole. Note that the guide hole should not be more than a quarter-inch deep.
Step 4
Once you make your guide hole that should be at least 1/8 inch deep, you should find it easier to control your drill. Still, you want to continue operating the drill with a light but firm and steady grip so that you are not forcing it in.
As you start gaining confidence, turn to the higher speed setting while keeping a firm grip on the drill with both hands. Continue drilling until you achieve your desired hole.
Keep in mind that concrete tends to have pebbles, stones, and air pockets that can make resistance erratic. Be careful not to lose control of your tool at this point.
Step 5
At this point, you should be drilling into your surface, and should you come across obstructions, never attempt to force the drill into the surface as this can damage the tool itself or the bits. Worse still, this can damage your hole or the surface.
Anytime you hit obstructions that hinder your drilling, put your tool down, use a masonry hammer, and nail to eliminate them. Once you are done, pick up your tool again, and continue drilling at low speed until you get through the obstruction.
Step 6
As you are drilling, intermittently stop the process to remove concrete dust. Since you can drill a two-inch hole within a minute, it is advisable to pause every 20 seconds to brush off the dust.
Safety Tips When Using a Hammer Drill
Hammer drills are quite dangerous. A single slight mistake could end up in an injured wrist. As such, you want to take precautions when using this tool.
The following tips should help you remain safe as you operate your tool.
- It is important to grip your tool firmly because at times, the drill bit jams and causes the drill to twist. If you are not holding your drill firmly when this happens, you risk being injured since this tool comes with high torque.
- Always wear safety gear such as ear protection, gloves, and goggles. A hammer drill can be loud and drilling generates debris. You also want to wear a dust mask to prevent you from breathing in concrete dust.
- Apply the right amount of pressure. If you have never used a hammer drill before, you may want to ask for professional help before acquainting yourself with the same.
- Use the right drill bit in terms of size for your hammer drill otherwise, you risk damaging your tool or even injuring yourself.
- Consider getting a drill with several operation modes to handle different applications otherwise, use a drill specified for the job you intend to do.
